Bill Joy, co-founder of Sun Microsystems, is a computer scientist, inventor and investor.
He is the principal and chief scientist of the capital of Water Street.
Our lives are not sustainable.
Greenhouse gas emissions threaten to get out of control of climate change, and excess nitrogen is polluting our waters.
We felt the upcoming sixth extinction, but were shocked by the sudden news of a significant reduction in insects.
Information technology has rapidly changed our economy, but it has not changed the areas of energy, materials and food that we desperately need to be sustainable.
We need to change our course.
Use 25 clean target lists
For more than a decade, I have been working to find, fund and commercialize major breakthroughs.
One of the challenges is that the price of the battery is much lower.
The other is sustainable building materials, especially concrete.
The third objective is sustainable development.
"They are not the only breakthroughs that will help us transition to a more sustainable economy and society, but innovation in these three areas has the potential to revolutionize our way of life.
I am an investor in some of these companies for full disclosure;
I want to tell you about them because I believe they can change the world.
As we transition from a fossil-fuel-based economy, batteries are already critical.
But cheaper, safer batteries, and batteries made of richer materials, are needed to make the grid and transport carbon dioxide.
So we found a charging room.
The unsafe and expensive liquid electrolyte that allows ion movement is replaced by a safe and inexpensive solid temperature battery.
We were lucky to find a material scientist who invented the electrolyte, a crystalline polymer.
Major countries like France and the UK have announced a ban on new sales of diesel and gasoline cars by 2040, as well as the breakthrough battery technology we have developed at ion materials (IM)
Lithium will be allowed
Ion battery cars are much faster than many expect to achieve the equivalent cost of burning cars.
Plus, my next one.
Low-cost alkaline batteries made of rich materials such as zinc, aluminum and manganese will be cheaper than lithium
Ion batteries make electric cars thousands of dollars cheaper than those with internal combustion engines.
This will help speed up the transition of electric vehicles and enable us to consider policies to eliminate legacy vehicles more quickly.
But electric cars are not really emissions.
Unless we remove carbon dioxide from the grid, it is free.
The manufacturing cost of rechargeable alkaline batteries is very low, we can imagine that we can store the power grid of kilowatts
Less than a penny of electricity in an hour, saving wind and solar energy, so it's available when we need it.
This could be a power grid operating entirely on renewable energy;
A power grid that can transfer energy from producers to storage locations 24 hours a day;
Power companies can not only provide electricity, but also power grids in the energy market;
Fossil fuels and other existing power generation capabilities are used only for backup power grids in extreme cases.
Cheap energy storage also makes the micro-grid
The grid system works better.
For example, rural areas in India can consider grid dependencies across distributed and more resilient systems.
Such a system enables Cuba to recover quickly from Hurricane Irma.
The polymer of ionic materials can also replace the alkaline fuel cell of marine diesel, greatly reducing the greenhouse gas footprint of marine transportation;
Lightweight polymer batteries with sulfur or air cathode can be used to power most aviation equipment, leaving only the longest-
Towing aircraft using renewable liquid fuel.
The profits and benefits of renewable energy will flow to innovators, manufacturers and users, and then to all of us, as renewable energy responds to climate change by significantly reducing emissions. The extraction-
In this shift, industries that rely on fossil fuels face the threat of recession or even extinction;
They are fighting hard and using deception, misleading and political chaos to keep profits --
The environmental and social consequences are damn.
This resistance must be overcome.
In addition to the battery, there are other breakthroughs that can completely change our economy and society.
In terms of materials, for example, we have funded a breakthrough in cement manufacturing, namely, emissions and energy.
About 5% of greenhouse gas emissions.
The new solidified cement is made by using a lower kiln temperature, and when used to make concrete, it consumes a lot of carbon dioxide instead of water, thus saving energy.
As a result, even if costs are substantially reduced without subsidies, the overall footprint is reduced by 70% per cent;
Such high profits are very interested in low-income people.
Profits in the cement and concrete industry.
Solidia technology also makes it possible to inflate concrete at a cheap price.
Lightweight, sturdy, insulated, and fire-proof inflatable concrete can replace materials commonly used in buildings, such as wood, plaster, bricks, and coal slag blocks, reducing the enormous pressure on the forest that is critical.
The new cement can also be mixed with polymers to form a lightweight, sturdy and DingTalk alternative to the board, reducing forest pressure.
What about the food?
We funded start-up companies other than Meat in 2011 to produce Meat substitutes from plant sources --
The first is chicken strips, then ground beef, which is currently in grocery stores across the United States. S.
Extensive substitution will have a huge positive impact on land use, forests and human health.
By turning to these and other innovative products such as the Memphis Meat lab, we can become more sustainable
It attracted investment from Bill Gates and Richard Branson, as well as Mycotech's innovative, complete protein products made from mushrooms.
But not all good news.
About 90% of the world's fish resources are now completely depleted or over-fished, but production continues to increase, often using disruptive technologies such as long-term fishing
Especially in unregulated international waters.
Innovators are engaged in fish farming, but overspending and certain habits --
For example, eat slowly
The development of bluefin tuna as sushi and sashimi and now almost extinct
Species and the entire ecosystem are being driven to extinction.
Innovators may be able to develop alternatives to tuna, but this is simply not sure if it will happen in a timely manner.
We need to do more urgently.
We seek breakthroughs in "major challenges" because they can bring a range of positive impacts and shifts far beyond the original application.
The approach to big challenges is effective
Significant improvements in reducing energy, material and food impacts are possible.
If we use these breakthrough innovations extensively, we will take an important step towards a sustainable future.
