Tuesday announced plans to build a new lithium-producing plant in Singapore, costing nearly $100 million.
Ion polymer battery, its first such factory in southeast Asia.
The plant, which will be the first such plant in Singapore, is scheduled to start in August 2008 with about 500 workers.
It will produce up to 8 million batteries per month on the same website as Sony's existing facilities in Tuas.
The batteries will be shipped to Sony customers worldwide for mobile phones, a company statement said.
Sony chose Singapore as the location of the factory because "Singapore has skilled engineering resources, excellent infrastructure and an ideal location for transporting products around the world, sony Executive Vice President Nakagawa Taka said in a statement.

The move comes as Sony tries to restore public trust in its brand after recalling nine companies last year.
