A project will take solar energy to a block in Brooklyn to make the streets safer.
Volunteers from the National Black Law Student Association joined the New York City reconstruction of a non-profit organization to install free lights on the homes and streets of Brownsville.
This is part of the group's "light It" project launched after Hurricane Sandy.
The plan adds better street lighting to the "dark areas" of the entire city to improve safety.
Organizers say they hope to install at least 100 lights by the end of this year.
"We are lighting up the street, we are lighting up the park, the playground, the family, and we do have volunteers.
This is a way for us to start incorporating our name into the community and building that relationship, and we start building that trust, "said Terry Scott, director of architecture, to rebuild New York City together.
New York will hold national reconstruction day on Saturday, April 28.
Volunteers will repair and renovate the residence and community center in Brownsville.
