Lou Stott: After Donald Trump takes office as the United States, we are coming.
This hour we have a special report on how he made the world. -
First, his influence in Asia. Mr.
Trump has been courting Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
But in the past 12 months, an unstable issue has also threatened relations between North Korea and the United States. S. commander-in-
The chief promised to destroy ISIS.
On the domestic front, we will measure that commitment.
Trump fought for deregulation and reform of immigration and health care, while Congress faced a deadline for a government shutdown.
Now let's take a look at Mr.
Growing relationship between Trump and China
CNN correspondent Matt Rivers reports in Dandong.
That is on the border between China and North Korea.
He's live with us now.
And, Matt, in the last year of Trump's presidency, a question defines the relationship between the United States and the United States. S.
China and North Korea.
Where is all this now?
Matt Rivers, cnn correspondent: Yes.
I mean, you're right, Christie.
No problem dominates the United States. S. -
In the first year of President Trump's administration, China's relations surpassed that of North Korea.
Frankly, an important result of this relationship is-
Working relations are three rounds of sanctions against Kim Jong Unun regime.
The impact of these sanctions is no more felt anywhere outside North Korea than in China.
Dandong, North Korean border city. (Start Video)
Rivers: there are fewer trucks today, and the bridge is quieter than in the past months and years, and if the bridge's traffic is the light, it means that trade between China and North Korea is slowing down.
This is a word for Dandong, which is an important trade center of China.
The main reason is the 7,000 mile coastline of New York.
M: The draft resolution should be adopted unanimously.
Rivers: A series of increasingly severe sanctions approved by the United StatesN.
The Security Council put pressure on South Korea in 2017.
The result is China, its largest trading partner.
These sanctions define the United States better than any other. S. -
China cooperation under President Trump
However, after Mr Trump split in the 2016 campaign, few expect the two sides to work together.
US President Donald Trump: Is China the trade deal with us.
No matter what it is, we don't seem to have it.
Rivers: China is the Republican candidate's favorite target, and he accused China of raping the United States. S.
Because the North Korean problem has not been solved economically.
But from March to Aprila-
Lago in Florida changed the tone of the president.
He got along well with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The US government will make concessions on trade, hoping that China will help put pressure on Kim Jong Un.
The United Nations has stopped developing nuclear weapons.
As a result, China has approved three rounds of sanctions after different nuclear and missile tests by North Korea.
Their goal is to move from oil to joint ventures with North Korean companies.
Dandong is one of the places where you come and see if they are enforced.
Restaurants like these, staff and popular businesses run by North Koreans have recently closed.
We have been to Dandong four times in the last two years and I can tell you that these streets used to be packed with North Koreans, buying items in these shops to go home and sell them.
But it's basically empty today.
We spoke with six different business owners in this area and they told us that the business has fallen sharply since the sanctions came into effect, although none of them would talk to us in camera for fear of wading into a sensitive issue.
It is clear that trade is still going on.
We still see trucks loaded with goods from North Korea, and the president recently told Reuters that China can still do more to contain Pyongyang's ambitions.
One example is that the crackdown on smuggling is still rampant in border areas, and as early as September we saw the public sale of illegal seafood on Chinese streets.
But back on the bridge, the effect of US lobbying for tougher sanctions is obvious. [08:05:00]
According to Chinese customs data, total trade between China and the DPRK fell by 50% in December 2017. (END VIDEOTAPE)
Rivers: Despite the decline in trade, the Trump administration says Beijing should do more.
If you, like many experts, think that North Korea will continue these provocations, missile tests, nuclear tests in 2018, then the Trump administration may demand more sanctions.
Will Beijing sign the contract?
Just as the Trump administration wants them to do so, this is an open question.
Every time we ask the Chinese to answer this question, they answer the same question, saying that we do not answer hypothetical questions.
Lou Stott: So for now, we know that Donald Trump is on the North Korean issue, and this week he opened fire on Russia instead of China.
But the issue of trade relations-
In an interview with Reuters this week, Trump said he hopes to cause potential damage to China due to infringement of intellectual property rights.
How does China react to this?
Are you worried that Trump will take tough action?
Yes, absolutely.
I mean, I know. -
I know the Chinese government is preparing for this possibility and what may happen.
We know that the Trump administration is seriously considering, for example, lobbying for tariffs on Chinese imports over the next few weeks, including many different types of goods, from solar panels to aluminum foil.
If they do, then the Chinese government will retaliate and they may retaliate against the United States. S.
Industries that have an impact on China.
So think about agricultural products like Kristie, worth more than $10 billion a year to the central states.
In Central America, for example, soybeans are shipped from the United States to China, its largest market.
Will the Chinese government retaliate against the United States? S. business? It's likely.
Then, many experts we have interviewed here say, does this lead to some sort of trade war?
Yes, it's a bit of an exaggerated turn, but this titsfor-
If China does something, then the US will do something, where does that make us?
This makes many experts in China a little nervous.
Lou Stott: Okay, Matt Rivers, in the United States. S-
A year after Trump took office, China's Dandong broadcast live on Sino-US relations.
Thanks, Matt.
Be sure to be with us.
We will carefully study the preparations for the Winter Olympics next month near South Korea.
Meanwhile, one of the things President Trump promised during his campaign was to fight ISIS.
The terrorist group was losing ground when he took office, but since then ISIS has been driven out of cities such as Mosul and Raqqa.
But the city war has killed many civilians, and now many cities have become ruins.
Now, CNN's Ava Damon looks at the rest of Mosul.
This report contains a graphic image with a warning. (Start Video)
CNN correspondent arwa damon: Local residents told municipalities that the body of a little girl was buried under the rubble.
No one knows her name and no one knows where her parents are.
Her body curled up in the position of the fetus, with rabbits in addition to dry skin and bones.
Her photos will be added to more and more unclaimed images.
She was almost beyond recognition.
But the workers hope that they will recognize her toy if her family is still alive.
In the old town where ISIS took the final stand, fighting and bombing was the most intense, it was hard to imagine anyone following any rules and how someone survived.
When Trump took over the war years ago, Trump did not change the rules of engagement.
This is a practical step and procedure for conducting military strikes.
What he did was for the United States. S.

Lou Stott: There are ruins and deaths everywhere in Mosul.
There's a broken report there.
Now, the Pentagon has responded to the Arwa report mentioned by The Associated Press in the report.
The Pentagon says. P.
No investigation was conducted in this case.
According to the Pentagon, according to news articles on unverified data, unlike ISIS, coalition forces are working to reduce the risk of civilians suspending their missions in situations where the risk of civilian casualties is unacceptable.
Now, Donald Trump's first overseas trip, as you recall, broke the tradition.
He traveled to Saudi Arabia, where he made a major arms deal with the country.
For more information about this relationship, let's go straight to Nic Robertson, which we live in Riyadh.
And, Nic, how close the United States is to the United StatesS. -
Saudi relations, and how does it shake an already polarized region?
CNN Correspondent Nick Robertson: Well, you know, in the year President Trump led the United States, relations with Saudi Arabia could be one of the stronger relationships in the world. There is a --
Of course, there is a consensus on the fight against al Qaeda and ISIS.
The region is working together to combat terrorism.
On Iran, Saudi Arabia's leaders, of course, see Iran as an expanding activist in the region, expanding its influence north of the border between Iraq and Syria and southern Yemen.
They think the White House has a similar or at least negative view of Iran's leadership.
They support terrorism in this area.
So on this issue, on Iran, of course they are the same.
When it comes to safety, and oil on the commercial side, as you said, there is already something important ---
There has been a major arms deal between the United States and Saudi Arabia.
So, especially throughout--
In the first year of President Trump's administration, relations between the two countries seemed very strong.
LU STOUT: Yes.
And Nic has more in Iran. -
You mentioned Trump's negative views on Iran, and Trump has been critical of the Iranian government and Iran's nuclear deal on the podium and Twitter.
In the next year when Trump is president, will we see the United StatesS.
Really going to Iran?
Robertson: Well, I mean, if we measure it based on what we 've seen in the past week, President Trump has to decide whether Iran has complied with the agreement, the nuclear agreement of 2015.
We see all the countries that the United States has attacked, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, China, the European Union, and all the officials have made it very clear that this transaction is important, and this is the best one can have at a time, it's important to keep it. [08:15:13]
Despite the remarks made by President Trump, we see in essence that he has again said that Iran has complied with the agreement.
Yes, he firmly opposes them in other respects.
Yes, his rhetoric on Iran is much stronger than President Obama's, and yes, it certainly makes him more popular in countries like Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Egypt, etc, many other countries in the region.
But I think, you know, will he make a difference in some of the threats he's making?
We have seen President Trump make a very loud speech on some issues.
North Korea will eventually become another country where rhetoric disappears.
Maybe the tweet appeared again, and the rhetoric came up and down.
But usually, action-
There is no action behind this sentence.
I think at this stage, when it comes to Iran, he seems to be listening at least to his allies.
Yes, but his actions do cause repercussions and consequences.
For example, Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
You know, it was announced last year.
After the impact continues.
Just this week, Palestinian leader Abbas called it a slap in the face of the century.
The PLO urged a moratorium on the recognition of Israel.
Will there be more people coming?
Robertson: It looks like this.
You know, there's no follow-up.
Strategically, you know, some people in the area want Palestine-
Progress has indeed been made in Israel's peace efforts.
There is an understanding that it has nowhere to go.
There are a lot of people in the region who want to see change. they think Trump is a spoiler and may disrupt the status quo and bring about change.
If he did not follow the strategy of using chaos so far, then the ball really fell in the Palestinian court.
They took it--
They are very firm in saying that your move is basically in support of Israel.
This is something we can't stand.
We also see this in the way President Trump deals with Pakistan.
He said Pakistan will either strengthen and combat terrorism as the United States hopes so that peace can be achieved in Afghanistan.
Otherwise, the United States has threatened to cut military aid, and steps have been taken in this regard.
We hear opposition from Pakistan. -
Pakistan ally of the United States.
National interests do not always intercept very succinctly.
The relationship has been in trouble for decades.
But in this case, President Trump's words and deeds have once again prompted the necessary partner to achieve peace in the region in Afghanistan.
We are also talking about peace in the Middle East, pushing people addicted to this equation away from the table, if you wish, away from where he wants them to be.
So if there is no further strategic plan to get them back and take advantage of this disruptive action, then, yes, at the moment ---
You know, the current gap between Palestinians and Israelis, in terms of getting them together for talks, seems like a lot at the moment.
Lou Stott: Nick Robertson reports live for us from Riyadh.
Thank you, Nic.
