Even if the sun sets, a new solar power plant has already started in North Cape.
As part of the government's procurement plan for independent power producers of renewable energy, the 100 MW Karoshoek Solar One project has been put into use 30 km kilometres east of Upington.
Niroshma Chetty, CEO of Karoshoek Solar One, told News 24: "The factory will provide electricity to about 100 households . ".

300 of them are local.
It has been created and 62 people will be employed directly during the operational phase.
"Not many projects are done on time and within budget as we did today.
"This is a huge effort involving a lot of teams," Chetty said . ".

System, Karoshoek facility is based on a centralized solar plant (CSP)technology.
Load Drop installation will be inserted into the state grid when Eskom is engaged in load reduction again due to the lack of enough coal in traditional power stations.

CSPs do not require coal to generate electricity and do not produce any waste related to coal or nuclear power plants.
"Once again, we have shown that solar energy can play a huge role in South Africa.
With renewable energy, we can combine the provision of electricity with positive social and environmental outcomes.
Solar technology enables us to produce energy without releasing carbon or other harmful emissions.
This is an important part of our energy portfolio . "
Several parabolic face mirrors focus the sun's rays on a collector that holds fluid.
This fluid is usually made up of salt and other materials, and it uses heat to turn the turbine, as in coal. powered plant.
The thermal fluid maintains heat for several hours, enabling the turbine to generate electricity during the day and at night.

After the sun sets, additional battery storage is required for the solar photovoltaic system to provide power.
"CSP is a compliment to other renewable sources
Wind and photovoltaic
"Because it can store energy, it is a dispatching power plant that can operate as either a peak power plant or a base-load power plant," explains Chetty . ".
"CSP is different from PV because the electricity generated by the CSP plant can be stored and supplied after dark.
The factory can store energy for five hours.
This allowed the factory to continue to power the grid after sunset.
According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena)
Although the agency is careful to point out that in sunny areas, the cost of horizontal power for CSPs can be significantly reduced.
According to data from the Centre for renewable and sustainable energy research at the University of Stellenbosch, North Cape province is an ideal place to install solar energy.
The northern province of IdealThe has Direct Normal sun exposure between 000 KW km/h and 3 200kWh/M2, which is the highest in the country.
According to Irena data, SA has seen a lot of solar installations since 2013.
Since 2014, CSP has increased its solar PV capacity by a net of 173 MW, with a net increase of about 300 MW.
Chetty said that the Karoshoek Solar One project is the fifth CSP project in the province, proving how ideal the project is in terms of conditions.
SA solar power generation has accumulated 486 MW, of which CSP is 300 MW.
Commercial funding for the Karoshoek Solar One project comes from ABSA, DBSA, IDC, Investec, Nedbank, Standard Bank, PIC and Vantage Capital.
