Cisco's Martin Lee told Sky News that the affected countries include the UK, but the main target of the hacking campaign is Ukraine.
The malware that Cisco calls VPNFilter can be used for espionage or to destroy the device it is infected.
This could cause serious damage in Ukraine, and a year later, the country spread all over the world and dismantled the Chernobyl radiation monitoring system in the process.
