In a system dominated by renewable energy, seasonal fluctuations in power production or demand require cheap, reliable and accessible energy storage on a scale that is currently difficult to achieve.
Mature compression in business
Air energy storage can be applied to porous rocks in the global deposition basin, where legacy data for oil and gas exploration can be obtained, and can be applied if geographically close to renewable energy sources.
Here, we propose a modeling method to predict the compression potential.

By combining this with a wide geological database, we have conducted a regional assessment of this potential in the United Kingdom.
We found that the potential storage capacity in January and February 2017 was equivalent to about 160% of the electricity used in the United Kingdom (77–96u2009TWh)
