DETROIT —
In the 2000 s, GM executives came up with an idea to deal with its natural gas in the face of capital outflows --

An engine backup that can run anywhere.
At the Detroit motor show in 2007, they released the Chevrolet Volt concept car, and they don't know if they have technology to make a major breakthrough in the battery field.

GM had hoped that customers could prepare a car that could travel 38 miles before a small internal combustion engine generator was put into use. They weren’t.
The last Volt was built on Tuesday at a small ceremony at a factory in Detroit that is now scheduled to close.
The average annual sales of less than 20,000 is not enough to sustain the expensive business.
Volt is not the first electric vehicle, but it is the first to overcome anxiety about range at a reasonable cost. GM’s limited-
Range EV1 is available at 1990 s, and Tesla has launched 200-plus-
The mile sports car sold for more than $100,000 in 2008.
Volt is one of the first plugs
In hybrid cars, many hybrid cars can only travel about 20 miles in terms of electricity, and are not very popular among consumers.
Volt does, however, have a purpose.
This led to the progress of lithium.
Ion batteries similar to smartphones and computers.
But these advances eventually led to the demise of the Volt, as GM and other manufacturers developed all-electric vehicles for 200 miles per charge.
"While this is an economic loser, it did what was expected," said Bob Lutz, vice chairman of retired GM, who directed Volt into production.
"We think it's a stepping stone to full power, and it's totally out of reach because of the situation at the time --
Astronomical cost of lithiumion batteries.
"GM now has Chevrolet Bolt, which can travel 238 miles with just one charge, promising more electric cars in the future.
Volt did develop a loyal fan base, many of whom were upset about the company cleaning up the project.
Richard Winters, 65year-
The old doctor from Poto, Oakland, says Volt is still useful in areas with few electric vehicle charging stations such as Oakland and Arkansas.
He bought his first Volt in 2016 for 120-mile round-
From home to the Arkansas hospital where he works.
He bought another one last year, an improved model that can travel 50 miles on power before the gas generator starts.
Because he can charge at work, most of his commute is powered by a battery.

He likes ups.
He said it only takes about $1 to charge the battery.
Winters has always wanted an electric car, but like many, he is worried that he will be stuck at home when his juice is run out.
"I was happy when Volt came out," he said of its almost unlimited range.
GM should spend more money to promote the car, he said.
"I was very surprised by the lack of marketing," he said . ".
"I wouldn't have an electric car if I didn't have a petrol engine.
"Initially, Volt was a stylish, future five-

Navigation Research analyst Sam Abuelsamid said the cylinder engine used to generate electricity.
But he said the project was scaled back to become a modified version of the Chevrolet Cruze compact car due to GM's financial problems, with only four seats and many other GM components.
Abuelsamid said: "They have made some great progress in that car, but this is not what they can imagine when they announced the concept, and of course it is not what they imagined . "
While it would be good to continue producing Volt, GM needs to stop production, in part because consumer preferences for SUVs have changed, he said.
He said the company is also losing money on a voltage per Volt, which is the cash needed to study autos and more advanced electric vehicles.
"This is not the right vehicle on the market today," said Abuelsamid . ".
"It makes no sense to keep it going.
Even though you want to do this, it's better to let go.
