Members of Northampton County will consider the revised private financing plan (PFI)
Suggestions for street lights.
If approved by the government, most of the street lights in the county will be replaced within five years.
David fakuhar, assistant director of Road Transport and Infrastructure, said: "This new technology will enable us to have more remote controls.
"Lighting levels can be adjusted according to the time of day.
"The new street light will reduce the energy by 40%, provide more uniform lighting, and will be white instead of the traditional yellow color.
In 2010, the council named Balfour Beatty the preferred bidder for the PFI program, but since the government's expenditure review, the council had to draft a new tender.
The county council is seeking a complete redesign of the way it provides lighting in residential areas and is still considering lighting in the 40 mile/hour area of town. The PFI program will also provide 25 years of maintenance for lighting
If the plan is approved by the Cabinet and government of Parliament, the first lights can be replaced by the end of 2011.
