As President Cyril ramafusa seeks to increase the use of renewable energy and reduce the country's reliance on coal, Eskom is planning its first major battery storage project.
Prince Moyo, general manager of Eskom power delivery Engineering, told Reuters that the battery storage project will be promoted in 90 locations in stages and the first phase of bidding will be held early next year.
"At this stage, the focus is on storing energy for the benefit of all our customers.
"The purpose is to ensure the safety of the power supply," Moyo said . ".
Although 1440 MW of battery projects per day are able to store less than 1% of Eskom's total power generation, this is a sign that utilities are delivering on their priority development commitments for renewable energy companies.
