Coventry City Council will begin reviewing its street lights to see if they can be darkened to save money.
Members will meet with police and community groups at BST 22: 00 in Holbrook to see what the impact of turning off the lights will be.
Councillor Rachel Lancaster says they are just "fact-finding" at this stage ".
The bureau is working with Balfour Beatty to install more than 28,000 new lights throughout the city.
As part of the PFI program, which started three years ago, all lamp posts are expected to be installed in 2015.
Lancaster MS, a member of the public service cabinet, said the meeting at whitet Lane and Brisco Road was part of the remote control light consultation.
The Labor MP said: "We have not decided whether we will reject them.
"We can do it by percentage to see what impact this has on these areas.
"Different roads have different categories.
Depending on the traffic flow, the time of day and the usage of the road, how much we will reject.
"This is something that can be done, and it's easy to reverse if it doesn't work, because we can talk effectively to each lamppost.
"It's a very flexible way of urban lighting.
"It saves money and it will extend the life of the light bulb in the lamp, so there is less maintenance.
"We are at the stage of discovering the facts.
