The first group of people with complete artificial hearts may be moving around by July.
On Tuesday, the United StatesS.
The Food and Drug Administration has approved two American companies that want to make hearts.
So far, heart patients have been implanted with ventricular devices to operate their chambers.
But the limited space in the chest means that the device works best on the left side of the heart, with equipment on both sides not longterm solution.
The new artificial heart is placed right into the chest, and the recipient has a battery pack on the chest.
The designers say they want patients not to show external signs that they have artificial hearts.
The plastic pump artificial organ consists of a motor that operates the pump using a membrane and valve made of solid, flexible plastic.
The motor is driven by an internal lithium battery that lasts about 1/2 hours.
When the battery is low, they can be charged from a portable external package through the patient's skin.
Additional electronic devices use stress measurements to detect when a heartbeat needs to be accelerated to respond to a patient's motor or sudden alarm needs.
The weight of the whole unit is about 2 pounds.
Abiomed, one of the companies that developed artificial heart, said they expected the first implant to be performed in the first half of 2001.
