Two coal operators
South Australia's thermal power plant will consider switching to solar thermal power after the federal government abandoned plans to pay for the shutdown of some power plants.
Alinta Energy owns and operates the 240 MW Playford power station in Port Augusta and the 540 MW North power station.
The Playford station, which is currently not operational, is one of the stations sealed up under federal government plans.
Energy Minister Martin Ferguson announced

Fired generators think their assets are worth more than the government is willing to pay.
"Alinta Energy respects the federal government's decision not to proceed with the closure of the contract;
"Obviously, there is no agreement on the value of commercial assets," the company said in a statement on Wednesday . ".
"According to today's announcement, Alinta Energy is considering the impact on Flinders's assets in SA and the potential for investment in solar thermal power generation.
"In the short term, Alinta said that the Northern power station will continue to operate in the coming summer, and the Playford power station will remain available according to market conditions.
Solar heat provides basic load power by generating heat using large solar collectors, which are then used to drive turbines.
City officials in Port Augusta have previously supported plans to move to new technologies.
