Chief Scientist Alan Finkel says electricity charges will rise and energy supplies will be less reliable unless Australia develops better storage systems.
A new report by Dr. Finkel's office and the Australian academic Council (ACOLA)
Planning and investment are needed to prevent electricity costs from continuing to rise and improve reliability, the warning said.
The reliability of renewable energy depends on energy storage, especially on days when the sun does not shine or the wind does not blow.
Storing energy from renewable sources such as solar and wind means suppliers are able to meet electricity demand at any time of the day.
Dr. Finkel used to suggest
Wind and solar power generators of Australian size should have energy storage capacity.
In addition to battery storage, today's report says battery storage costs are the highest
It also lists alternatives including fast, an effective way to strengthen energy security
Start the rotary reserve of gas turbines, wind turbines, demand response and load reduction measures.
"As the penetration rate of renewable energy, solar energy and wind energy increases, we will need storage to be a very important part of having a stable, safe and reliable grid, bruce Godfrey, the lead author of the report, said. "[
This will also help]
Make environmental benefits from low
Source of emissions.
"The report estimates that in order to provide safe energy supplies, Australia will need to spend about $11 billion for storage by 2030.
But as Australia transitions to renewable energy, more money may need to be spent to make sure the power supply is reliable.
Dr. Finkel said Australia still has a long way to go in storage and predicted that future storage projects will dwarf those already developed.
"The challenge we face is how to transition from here to there.
"We are going to move towards a new future and it is happening all over the world, which is inevitable," said Dr. Finkel . ".
"This report shows that if storage is used effectively, we can manage this transition smoothly at the lowest possible price.
"This report was released before the state and federal energy ministers' meeting, which discussed the national energy security of the Turnbull government (NEG).
According to 28 to 36 of new energy generation, renewable energy is expected to account for power generation by 2030.
According to the Climate Council model, this means that Australia will miss the 6,000 to 20,000 new jobs it would have created.
Andrew Stock has decades of experience in the energy sector and serves as a member of the Council. By 2030, at least some power generation should be renewable, he said.
"The level of expectation that the federal government is currently talking about is well below the level required, so we need more power expectation plans.
"This will bring more jobs and the industry will add 20,000 jobs," he told AM . ".
The chief scientist's report says this goal is easy to achieve without compromising reliability or requiring further significant investments in energy storage.
