Together with the 2018 Jeep Wrangler, the 2019 Ram 1500 features a 48 v mild hybrid system, the first such system on large-capacity vehicles in North America.
In the US market, consumers often respond to surveys that they want better fuel economy, but rarely use their dollars to achieve this effect, adding a 48 v system and naming it eTorque is most likely the route in the heart of the truck buyer.
Given that the FCA was at the bottom of the company's average fuel economy ranking in 2016, although the federal government tried to limit these standards to 2020, but adding photoelectric gasification to its two most popular models seems a smart move. Until the 3. 0-
At some point in 2019, the new Ram 1500 was limited to a pair of gasoline engines, 3. 6-
Five liters of V6 and five. 7-liter Hemi V8.
We had the opportunity to drive standard Hemi earlier this year, so this review will focus on the new light hybrid.
As in previous years, well-
Considered the standard engine on Ram 1500, but for the 2019 models, the 48 V light hybrid system is also used as the standard on that engine.
The hybrid system is optional on V8, but it is expected to account for most of the retail sales of new trucks.
The basic implementation of both engines is the same, but there are some differences in detail.
All 48 v systems are composed of motor generator units, which recover kinetic energy during braking and store it in batteries with higher capacity, the energy is then provided to the power system in the vehicle and some power propulsion assistance is provided.
The configuration used by the FCA has a bandstarter-
It looks like a generator (BSG) of a traditional 12 v AC generator, packed in the same location.
Other configurations, such as the one that debuted on the new Mercedes this yearBenz inline-
Six engines have an integrated motor generator installed at the rear of the crankshaft between the engine and the transmission.
These systems are more efficient and can generate more power, but at a higher cost.
On Ram V6, the BSG is suspended at the front of the engine and has a reverse rotation compared to the traditional position on the side of the engine.
This mounting position allows for shorter belts, but the reverse positioning of the motor limits the airflow of the cooling.
Therefore, the BSG supplied by this continent uses its own dedicated cooling circuit and heat exchanger for liquid cooling.
Malley's-
The BSG provided on V8 is located at the top of the engine, allowing more cooling air to flow through the engine, so no liquid cooling is required.
Both bgs have power electronics that can convert the AC they produce into the DC of the battery, making it easier to package when integrated.
V6 BSG up to 90 lbs
Larger units on Ft can add 130 lbs-ft.
On both engines, the belt is upgraded from the standard six

The ETorque is equipped with a zero engine temperature and also retains the traditional starter motor and 12 v lead acid battery for reliable cold start.
Packaging is also an important consideration for lithium ion battery packs. The air-

Battery Management System and DC-
The DC converter between 48 V and 12 V is also in the same box.
Because the Wrangler driver can remove the top of the open-air drive, the FCA engineer used a sealed liquid-cold battery pack on the Jeep.
Like all hybrids, the system uses only part of the total battery capacity to optimize durability, with up to 130 Wh on Ram.
What did 48 v bring you?
The standard 12 v electrical system in the vehicle can only produce about 2 to 2.
5 KW of electricity.
Climb aboard a modern car like a Ram pickup truck and you will find a wide variety of features and amenities such as heated seats, 12-

Regional climate control, driver assistance, etc. all of this is powered by electricity.
Raising the electrical system to 48 v, engineers can use up to 10 KW of the voltage to drive those power-hungry accessories and help push the system while using less gas. Unlike high-
A voltage hybrid system like Prius, a gentle hybrid system like eTorque doesn't have enough power to drive a carfree EV mode.
But it can reduce the overall load of the engine and increase the fuel economy by about 10%.
The FCA utilizes additional available power to keep the engine shut down or to operate in a reduced consumption mode for longer than the 12 v system.
Five years ago, FCA was the first company to increase automatic parking.
Start the truck engine.
Like other systems, when the vehicle stops, the ability to turn off the engine is limited by other factors, such as the use of air conditioners, lights and other accessories that may drain the battery and affect the restart capability.
Large Lithium batteries can be powered to the main 12 v system on the truck via DC
The engine can be turned off for 10 minutes under ideal conditions.
On a hot summer day when the air conditioner is running, a traditional 12 v car or truck may be restarted in the red half
Maybe not even closed.
On the eTorque Ram, the engine is continuously turned off at almost every station.
After these outages, the BSG actually starts the engine to restart, and as the engine starts, the truck starts to move (about half the wheels rotate, according to Brian Spohn, an electrical engineer at Ram ).
The result is a more smooth restart than a 12 v system.
Like all hybrid cars, regenerative braking is at the heart of its function.
When the driver is lifted from the accelerator pedal, the kinetic energy of the truck's movement is converted into electric energy.
When the truck is reclining or braking, the crankshaft sends the BSG through the Belt and electronics to the battery.
Over 10 miles/hour, regen blends seamlessly with the friction brake, then phase out regen at a lower speed, leaving only the friction brake to ensure a completely safe stop.
Spohn's team has also implemented various control changes to maximize energy recovery and driving capabilities.
When slowing down, the fuel flow of the engine is turned off more actively than normal on the 12 V system, and the shutdown time is longer, because the BSG has enough torque to help turn the engine during the vehicle transient it is possible to convert back to acceleration.
Another interesting detail is the transfer.
When the engine speed needs to be reduced, BSG is used to slow down the engine speed during a short interval between the gears in the upper gear.
The result of this is a smoother, faster transition, and some energy.
Conversely, when the engine needs acceleration when downshifting, it is possible to use BSG to accelerate it without using added gas.
Over the years, the HEMI V8 has been equipped with a cylinder deactivating system that can turn off four cylinders under light load conditions.
However, since most roads are not completely flat, the engine often cycles back and forth between four to eight cylinder modes.
With a mild hybrid system, the BSG can give the engine enough lift on a mild grade to keep the engine in four cylinder mode, thus keeping the other four cylinders off.
Due to the limited size of the battery, when driving in parking and driving or in a longer grade, it can easily reach the charging capacity from the regenerative braking.
It is redirected to speed up cooling fans and super fans instead of wasting energy that cannot be stored
Cooling the radiator
Therefore, when the truck stops in hot weather, it can act as a radiator when the engine is not turned, thus prolonging downtime and improving fuel efficiency.
How good is it working?
All in all, great.
In most cases, the driver may never notice the eTorque at work before checking the fuel economy.
The additional torque provided by the BSG is restarted more smoothly than most 12 v systems.
Typically the most noticeable restart on a 12 v system is the one that occurs while the brake pedal is still in use.
When the engine starts, the reaction torque on the power system usually causes vibration.
The increased capacity means that this is rare for eTorque.
Similarly, other transitions, such as cylinder de-activation and displacement, are slightly more refined than the already excellent behavior of Ram.
Looking ahead, the increased power capacity of the 48 v system will make it possible for FCA engineers to power other components (such as oil and cooling pumps) or add new features to the truck.
At the moment, while the key reason for increasing eTorque is the need to improve the fuel economy of these trucks.
In the 2016 model year, the average fleet of light trucks in the FCA was 26.
4 miles, but the target is 29. 0 mpg.
Even if it is proposed to freeze the fuel economy standard at 2020 levels, the FCA has some extra work to do, which is why we will see more of the various types of electrified throughout the series. The non-
The eTorque version of 2019 Ram 1500 Hemi released a few months ago was rated by EPA as 17 mpg.
The ETorque version was rated on the 19 mpg combination of 2WD (22 mpg highway for 4WD), 17 mpg city and 23 mpg highway, improved7%.
V6 is about a month away from the market, and the EPA rating has not yet been announced.
However, the existing 2018 Ram classic V6 is rated at 20 mpg, so it is possible that 2019 eTorque V6 will get about 22-23 mpg.
In the course of driving 4WD V8 Ram Laramie Longhorn over 50 miles in Lexington, Kentucky, and the surrounding countryside, I averaged 19 miles.
2 mpg, once V6 eTorque is available this fall, it will become the standard power system in 2019 Ram 1500.
The addition of ETorque added a relatively modest $1,450 to the price of Hemi.
If you're thinking about V8 Ram, whether it's an improvement in it or fuel savings, it's worth considering that increase, which will come in handy if prices soar again.
